How to Plan Your Wardrobe Design Before Installation
Planning a wardrobe design before installation can help you make better use of your space and avoid ending up with storage that looks right but does not work for your daily routine.
A little preparation can make it easier to decide what you need from your new wardrobe.
1. Measure and assess the room
Start by noting the width, height and depth of the area where the wardrobe will go. Also consider features that might affect the design, including sloping ceilings, alcoves, skirting boards, sockets, radiators and nearby doors.
If the wardrobe will sit close to a bed or other furniture, check how much space is available in front of it. This can help you decide whether sliding doors would be a good option.
2. Take stock of what you need to store
Think about your clothes, shoes, bags, bedding and accessories. You do not need to count every item, but a rough idea of what you own can help you plan the balance between hanging rails, shelves and drawers.
Consider how your needs might change over time. For example, you may want flexible shelving or additional hanging space.
3. Notice what frustrates you now
What is difficult about your current wardrobe? Perhaps your shoes are hard to reach, folded clothes are difficult to see, or there is no sensible place for bags and accessories.
These everyday frustrations can help guide the new design. A wardrobe should make storage easier to use, not simply provide more of it.
4. Think about the finish
Look at the colours and materials already in your bedroom. Decide whether you want the wardrobe to blend into the room or become a feature. Sliding wardrobe doors can be finished in a way that supports either approach.
5. Plan for access
It is not only important to decide what goes inside the wardrobe; you also need to think about how you will reach it. Place regularly used items in convenient sections and consider how the doors will move in relation to the room.
